Suntree Elementary was the biggest winner in the “Christmas in July” Fundraiser Raffle hosted by The Courtyards of Suntree. The event, held on July 31st raised money for the school’s outdoor classrooms and supplies. Proceeds were $1,450, far exceeding the goal set for the event. The fundraising committee presented a check to Suntree Elementary Principal Dr. Shari Tressler on August 23rd. Dr. Tressler told the committee, “You’ve made us very happy today!”
The Suntree Community, local businesses and our Courtyards’ residents responded generously to the call for donations. A number of businesses gave entire gift baskets for the Basket Raffle, and our residents gave individual items and cash donations.
Despite the 100 degree heat, the event was well-attended; neighbors, friends and families enjoyed tasty potluck dishes prepared by the residents, as well as free hotdogs on the grill. A number of young children and their parents enjoyed the pool as well.
Local resident musician and singer Burt Glionna provided great entertainment nearly non-stop for the 3-hour event.
The Courtyards is planning its next fundraising event – “Harvest Fest” – for October 2022.

The Courtyards has two entrances, one on Pinehurst South and one on St. Andrews. Since the beginning of the community there has been an amazing 20′ flagpole in front of the monument on the Pinehurst entrance. In the past, attempts have been made to install flagpoles at the St. Andrews entrance but due to the high winds they failed.
In 2019 the community began exploring the possibility of installing a more substantial flagpole at the St. Andrews entrance. After several discussions by the board the decision was made to ask for donations from the community to cover the cost of a new flagpole, flag, and the installation at the entrance. On December 2020, the board gave homeowners Judy Barrett and Leslie Marcaurelle approval to move forward with the project, which they named “Operation Flagpole.”
Judy and Leslie researched the costs and called for vendor bids for the installation. Their research included the logistics of receiving and erecting a 20′ commercial one piece flagpole and the landscape design before and after the final installation. They contacted Federal Flags, Inc. (located in Wisconsin) who guided them through the process of selecting the best flagpole for our area. They chose one that is rated to withstand hurricane winds up to 255 MPH. Due to the length of the pole, it had to be shipped by a semi with a trailer which added to the project costs. Also purchased were two beautiful 4×6 US-made nylon flags, one for each entrance, and a solar light needed for the new flagpole. Judy and Leslie solicited contributions from the membership, which responded generously to cover the costs of the flagpole, the accessories, and the landscaping.
Brandy Gautney, the owner of “Natural Harmony, LLC,” was hired as the contractor to see the team through the entire project, also to include landscaping at the entrance on Pinehurst South. Her professional knowledge, experience with landscaping, and her respect for the flag guided the team through many decisions. The project was completed, included landscaping for both entrances just in time for a Memorial Day dedication on May 31, 2021.
At the dedication, attended by 25 residents, Sue Hodgson read “My Name is Old Glory.” The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and just at the conclusion, a magnificent USAF C-17 slowly flew over the dedication making it fitting tribute to The Courtyards’ new flagpole and flag to be honored and enjoyed for many years to come.
